. . . WeCount! organizes Dialogue with the Miami-Dade Police Department about Racial Profiling. On March 16, over 100 members and allies attended a forum at the First United Methodist Church of Homestead with the Miami-Dade Police Department about Racial Profiling. Community members spoke about their experiences being racially profiled by police, and how ICE's "S-Comm" program can turn arrests for minor violations into deportations and family separation. WeCount! presented survey results showing that Latino drivers in Homestead are three times more likely to be stopped by police than white drivers. Our ask was simple: That county police retrain their officers on racial profiling. To be continued...

. . . 2nd Macy's protest, victory against wage theft pre-emption bill. WeCount! joined members of the South Florida AFL-CIO and the Florida Wage Theft Task Force on March 5 in our second protest in front of Macy's in downtown Miami. A bill in the Florida Legislature banning Miami-Dade's promising wage theft program was backed by the Florida Retail Federation, an association of major chains, of which a Macy's VP is president. The bill passed the House, but died when the regular legislative session ended on March 9 without it being taken up by the full Senate. We thank Sen. Anitere Flores (R-Miami), for her role in defeating the bill. Shamefully, her Miami-Dade Latino Republican counterparts in the House all voted for the bill. Rep. Eduardo Gonzalez and Rep. Carlos Trujillo spoke out on the floor in favor of this anti-worker bill, which will particularly harm Latino workers.
